The four trauma responses
Fight protects you by pushing back, taking charge or holding on to control. Flight keeps you safe by staying in motion: busy, planning, achieving. Freeze hits the brakes when fighting or running doesn’t feel possible, so you go blank, numb or stuck. Fawn keeps you safe by keeping others happy, often at the cost of your own needs.
None of these are flaws. Each one is a survival skill your nervous system learned, often in childhood, when it was the best way to stay safe. Healing starts with understanding which response you lean on, and gently teaching your body that it’s safe now.
