Yahoo Life: How to Stay Calm When Life Feels Uncertain

When life throws us curveballs, finding calm can feel challenging—especially when uncertainty is all around us.

Recently, I was honored to contribute to Yahoo Life’s article, *4 Ways to Keep Calm When I Have No Idea What Is Going On, According to Therapists.*

As a trauma therapist, I’m passionate about helping people manage the toll that stress and unpredictability can take on their minds and bodies.

In this blog, I’ll expand on the somatic therapy for anxiety techniques I shared in the article. I will also explain how these practices can empower you to stay grounded during turbulent times.

1. Somatic Breathing and Grounding

In the article, I discussed the value of grounding techniques to calm the nervous system, especially in moments of heightened anxiety.

Somatic breathing is a powerful way to soothe the body by gently regulating the breath.

A simple way to start is by focusing on taking deep, measured breaths—this signals to your body that it’s safe to release tension.

As your body relaxes, it becomes easier to connect with the present moment rather than feeling swept up in stress or panic.

2. Embracing Self-Compassion with Somatic Awareness and Somatic Therapy

One of the most helpful approaches to managing stress is developing somatic self-compassion.

When stress takes hold, it’s common to feel pressure to simply “get it together,” which only fuels more anxiety.

By gently tuning into physical sensations—like tension in the neck, jaw, or shoulders—you can start to release the need to “fix” the feeling. Instead allow it to soften naturally.

This somatic awareness opens the door to treating yourself with the kindness and understanding you would show a close friend.

3. Building Curiosity through Somatic Inquiry

Anxiety often triggers a need to control or predict outcomes.

In the Yahoo Life article, I shared how curiosity can help approach stress with openness rather than resistance.

Somatic inquiry allows us to ask questions like, “What am I noticing in my body?” or “Where do I feel the tension?”

This form of curiosity moves us from reactivity to discovery, helping us manage anxiety by staying engaged with the sensations that arise in each moment.

4. Finding Community and Support

When uncertainty feels overwhelming, reaching out for support is key.

Working with a trauma-informed therapist like Shay DuBois can provide the safe space you need to process trauma.

Somatic Therapy isn’t only for PTSD.   While somatic therapy is one of the best approaches for PTSD it can help with much more.

Through a compassionate approach to somatic therapy,

Shay offers a way to connect with your body’s signals, respond to stress more effectively, and uncover the root of overwhelming emotions.
